Meet our Judges!

Amy Johnson

Amy Johnson has held many positions in our community over the course of the past 38 years. She's currently the Director of Donor & Community Relations at the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids. You can also watch her regularly on lowa PBS Television. Amy is especially passionate about the arts - and is proud to serve on the Board of Directors at CSPS Hall, the site of tonight's competition. She's thrilled to be one of your judges tonight and in awe of the fabulous talent we have in Eastern lowa!

Nick AbouAssaly

Nicolas AbouAssaly is serving his third term as Marion's mayor. Mr. AbouAssaly is a partner at the Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman law firm in Cedar Rapids and is very active in the Marion community. Prior to serving on the City Council, AbouAssaly was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Uptown Marion - Iowa Main Street Community Board of Directors, and numerous community committees.

He has been on the Corridor Business Journal’s list of most influential people in the Corridor for seven consecutive years, topping the list in 2018 and again in 2020, and was the 2019 recipient of the National Council on Youth Leadership’s Visionary Youth Leadership Award. In 2023 he was recognized as the inaugural Mayor of the Year for cities with more than 2,000 in population by the Iowa Mayors Association. He is an advocate for progress in Marion and the region.

Tim Hankewich

The 2024-25 season marks Timothy Hankewich’s 19th year as Music Director of Orchestra Iowa. Timothy Hankewich is a native of Dawson Creek, British Columbia and is married to his wife Jill, a pharmacist. He graduated from the University of Alberta, earning his Bachelor of Music degree with honors in piano performance under Professor Alexandra Munn, and a Master’s degree in choral conducting under the direction of Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff. He received his doctorate in instrumental and opera conducting from Indiana University, where his primary teachers were Imre Palló and Thomas Baldner. His studies have also included summers in Vienna and Aspen where he worked under the tutelage of Maestros David Zinman, Bruno Weill, Yuri Temirkanov, Robert Spano, Michael Stern, Murray Sidlin, Julius Rudel, James DePreist, and James Conlon.

Eric Hanson

The logical local. DINK and dog owner. Boy this guy doesn’t know when to quit. He volunteers for arts and human services groups throughout the region. Travel back in time and you’ll discover he was part of team that launched Z102.9. Named Radio Ink’s “Program Director of the Year” twice. He’ll always root for his beloved Washington Demons, but Iowa holds a special place in his heart. Eric loves his Hawkeyes and loves that he met his uber hip wife of 20+ years, Shannon, in the Hawkeye Marching Band. Enjoys life’s experiences, travel and theater. Throw him a line and ask him to improv.
